Chipping away at a creature will use 10 of the required runes. You can also chip off a creature to gain some rune essence. A creature only has enough runic energy to make 5 runes, then they will die and you will also gain 50 rune essence. When you siphon a creature, you will turn your rune essence into runes of that creatures type.
